Leigh High Street

Innovative solutions to improve erosion resilience and improve nature diversity

This section of Leigh High Street is extremely narrow and sandwiched between the seawall and the mainline railway. Despite being so narrow, this road is used by large heavy vehicles travelling to and from Leigh Port. To maintain the road and prevent damage to the railway line this section of seawall is due to be improved.

Traditional piling techniques will be used to upgrade the seawall.

We’re investigating how we can incorporate nature-based solutions within the design, helping to improve local biodiversity. The plan is to create bespoke piling habitats to sit within a traditional revetment system. These will be designed to promote the history of Leigh Port and its cockling heritage.
