As part of future flood resilience across the City of Southend, we plan to install surface water flood warning beacons at the Southend seafront.
When high tides coincide with heavy rainfall surface water sewers are prevented from discharging into the sea and flooding from manholes can occur, this is called tide-locking.
The beacons will be connected to the surface water network and will flash at times if high risk, i.e. when the surface water system is approaching capacity.
The beacons will give the community more time to prepare and protect themselves from surface water flooding.
By being better prepared, we can help reduce the disruption caused by surface water flooding to local residents and businesses.
