Benfleet Creek
Improving water quality with mycelium
Overview
To help improve water quality at Benfleet Creek a series of innovative reedbeds will be installed at Anglian Water’s water recycling (WRC) centre at Benfleet.
It is thought that some of the high levels of nitrates and phosphates in the creek originate from WRC. By installing a series of innovative reedbeds on the storm-water overflow at WRC can capture and store these nutrients pollutants and prevent them from moving downstream to Two Tree Island where these nutrients are causing significant algae growth which is inhibiting saltmarsh growth.
This will be a first in the UK!
